Just a note

Happy Friday to you! It's been a real wet and rainy one here in Brisbane this week - my favourite type of weather! I'm here once again to share an AnnaBelle Stamps challenge with you - Say it in Kraft, Lemon and White:

I went with a kraft cardbase and came up with the following card:

I started by using post-its to mask off the sides of the cardfront and stamped the flower image from Fanciful Flowers randomly to create a pattern using Brilliance White ink and Canary Versacolor ink.
I removed the post-its and stamped the sentiment (also from Fanciful Flowers) with Versafine Onyx Black ink.

I then used a ruler to add lines using a white gel pen.

Just a note

I'm so glad it's Friday! Even though it's been a short week at work this week due to the public holiday on Wednesday (Anzac Day) I will be over the moon when this week is over ;)

And because it's Friday I have another AnnaBelle Stamps challenge for you!

I used the placement of the shapes in the sketch for the elements in my card below:

I inked up the gorgeous dandelion image from Garden Silhouettes first with Broken China Distress ink and then around the edges with Stormy Sky Distress ink. I stamped it on smooth white cardstock cut to 3.5x3.5" (folded).

The sentiment is from Fanciful Flowers stamped with Versafine Onyx Black ink. The rhinestones beside the sentiment are 'Ice Blue' from Kaisercraft. I created the scallop border with my Fiskars Scallop Sentiment punch.

In my heart

So happy it's Friday today! I hope everyone has lots of great plans for the weekend... I don't have much going on which is the way I like it! :) I do plan on getting up to date with Google Reader though... I'm so behind on all my commenting it's not funny!

I love Fridays for two reasons - firstly, the weekend is just around the corner and secondly, I get to share another AnnaBelle Stamps challenge with you! This week we want you to use the colours Red, Black and White on your cards.

To keep the hearts straight I drew a line in pencil. I used one of the hearts from AnnaBelle Stamps' Love Birds set and stamped it repeatedly along the line, once with Scarlet Versacolor ink and then around it with Versafine Onyx Black ink. The card itself is my favourite size - 4" x 3" - to fit inside the mini envelopes that I have in my stash.

The sentiment is also from the Love Birds set. The whole sentiment is 'in my heart forever' (which I used on this card) but I masked the 'forever' with post-its and stamped the 'in my heart' part above the row of hearts with Versafine Onyx Black ink.

It's such a pleasant day today (the clouds have come along to give some reprieve from the hot, Summer sun) that I want to be outside but before I go and tackle the errant rosemary I thought I would share another card I made for AnnaBelle Stamps' latest challenge but opted for the one in this post.



I simply didn't like it when I first stamped it - maybe because of the stem being black - too much black, perhaps? However, my liking for it increased with a second viewing (when I found it in the pile of paper and bits that I was about to chuck away) and I like the black more now than when I first stamped it. Anyway, what do you think?


I stamped the flower with Hyacinth Versacolor ink. The stem and sentiment are stamped with Versafine Onyx Black ink. The cardbase is 4" x 6" top folding using Bazzil cardstock for texture.

I'm back again to share another AnnaBelle Stamps challenge with you. This week is Anything Goes which means you can let your creativity go wherever it wants to take you!

I am showing a sneak peek of another beautiful new set from AnnaBelle stamps called 'Fanciful Flowers'. It has loads of beautiful sentiments and silhouette flowers and stems - my favourite things!

I stamped the sentiment first on a 4x4 white cardbase using Versafine Onyx Black ink. I then stamped the flowers in Ash Rose and Petal Pink Versacolor ink. The stems were stamped last using Kaiser ink in Splice.

Super simple card! I think the hardest thing was working out which colours to use ;)

Hello + Work in Progress!

A simple one-layer mini card to make it just under the wire for this week's Wee Memories challenge to make a one layer card. Susan from Simplicity wants us to colour our one-layer cards, and I'm also playing along with CAS-ual Friday's challenge this week to create a mini card.



I'm all about the mini cards these days and I love one-layer cards, so these two challenges were made to be combined in my opinion! Here is what I came up with:





I printed the flower from Mujka Chic's Contemporary Design Elements from myGrafico on thick lightly textured cardstock (I can't remember the brand) that measured 4" x 6". I eyeballed it to come up with the correct placement of the flower on the cardstock and ran it through my printer.



 I stamped the sentiment from Simple Messages by Hero Arts in Versafine Black Onyx ink before doing any colouring just in case I had a mishap (it happens rather often unfortunately...)

I then coloured the flower using a combination of Prismacolor pencils (Lilac, Lavender, Salmon Pink, Parma Violet, Canary Yellow, Spanish Orange and Burnt Ochre) as well as Light Orange to accent the polleny bits in the center of the flower. For blending I used a stump sponged with Zest-it blending medium. I took pictures as I went (fun!) and put them together in a collage:

I haven't been making many cards lately because my craft room is still getting organised which has been eating into my spare crafty time. I'm on holidays for this whole week so I'm going to make sure that I fit in lots of organising as well as crafting, yay!

So on with the card. I made this one for my niece who recently had an ear infection which led to some unpleasantness with her eardrum. Not fun! She lives in North Queensland so I made this card to send up to her:






First I masked the bottom strip of the card with a post-it and stamped all over it with the bird flourish from the Flourishes set by Inkadinkado in Versafine Black Onyx ink. I took the post-it off and drew two lines using a black fine-tip marker and stamped the sentiment from Fiskars' All Year Greetings set in Versafine Black Onyx again.

I coloured the birds using my new Lyra Polycolor pencils. I recently bought a 24 set of these off ebay to try out after reading Dorcas' Prismas vs Lyras post, and I have to say, I love my Prismacolors but Lyras offer something different - absolutely effortless blending! I laid down a couple of different yellows just on the bottom bits (for want of a better word) of each bird and used a blending stump dipped in my Zest-it sponge to smooth out the colour and you can see the results for yourself - I don't think I reapplied the Zest-it to my stump once, which was nice. On top of the blendability, as these pencils are oil-based they don't put a translucent sheen of wax on the lines of the stamped image like Prismacolors do. The waxy sheen is the thing I like about my Prismas least, but as I have invested so much money in them and they are more readily available to me I'll still be using them for a while yet. To counteract the waxiness usually I go around the lines with a black pencil. I was pleased to be able to miss that step this time around!

I also added some 10% grey as shading around the bases of the birds and some of the tendrils (Prismas this time - the grey in my Lyra set was far too dark) to give the card some dimension since it was a completely flat one-layer card (for posting).

 After printing the card (see template below) on white cardstock I used a strip of Mask-It film sheet - a temporary low-tack adhesive plastic - to create an invisible border above and below my sentiment. I then stamped some of the flowers from 'Petals from Scratch' by Fiskars with Black Onyx Versafine ink. After pulling off the masking film I took out Versacolor cubes in Boysenberry, Grape and Raspberry (yummm) and diluted them with a spritz of water on a stamping block and used a paintbrush to colour the flowers. As you can see from the photo above I went for a very loose and watercoloury effect which goes well with the loosely drawn flowers.


It can take a bit of trial and error to get the sentiment placed just right on the cardfront but to make the process even easier I've done the hard part for you by making up a word document with the sentiment already in the right spot and the page dimensions to print a 4x8" (score at 4") card - all you need to do is print it out and stamp/embellish/whatever!

Congratulations

I haven't taken part in the One-Layer-Wednesday challenges lately, but something made me want to join this week's challenge though - the theme is Heavy Metal!

Here's my card:

I used a combination of Fiskars stamps for this card - the dress is from the China and Glass set and the sentiment is from the All Year Greetings set. You can't really tell from the photo but I stamped both using Silver Versacolor ink.

The card itself is a precut/scored one I got in a 5 pack from my local bargain shop ages ago and sat neglected until now.

And as I have so little supplies and have them all listed in the text above, I call this entry done!

I got stuck into making 'Thank You' cards this weekend because I have none! I seem to be making birthday cards more than anything these days so it's good to do something a little bit different.

This is for the Helping Hudson Challenge No. 3: Technique. I urge you to visit the blog and try your hand at the challenges - it's all for a very good cause.

The technique is 'rock and roll' - inking up the stamp all over in a light colour and then rolling around the edges with a darker colour. I love the combination of Versacolor "Misty Mauve" and "Ash Rose" which I used for this card so I decided to use it again here:



I didn't 'roll' so much as 'dob' (my new favourite word) on the darker ink ("Ash Rose") and I only did it on the wings. Some more than others, as you can probably tell. It did the job though!

I also cracked out my brand new Mask It Film Sheets from Make it Crafty (Aussie online store) to mask off the bottom and the top, instead of using post-its. The beauty of using this material (well actually there are a couple of beauties) is that it can be cleaned after use, which is exactly what I want - I hate waste! Another beauty is that the ink will never saturate through because it's plastic. A while ago I was experimenting with different masking materials and used tissue paper - um never do that - just a little tip from me to you.

The only thing I think that could be a bad thing when using the film to mask in this way is that the plastic combined with wet ink can make for a bit of a slippery surface. Just be mindful of this and exercise caution when stamping mostly on the masked parts. Luckily the one-layer gods were looking down on me when I was making this card and I didn't fudge any of it. Hallelujah!

Thinking of you

This card is my entry in to this week's One Layer Wednesday challenge by Simplicity.

This week's challenge is to use a flourish in some way. I have a couple of flourish stamps but they didn't speak to me at all (don't you hate that?!) until I just decided to lay down some ink on one and see where it took me. This card is the result:



I didn't like it when I first stamped it - I actually threw it into the scrap pile, but I had a change of heart and decided to round the corners to see if that made an improvement and it did! I am not one for rounding corners of cards (but I love the look!) so this is a bit different for me.

Oh and I also added a bit of bling to the centers of the flowers with my clear Spica pen.

Today's card is my entry into Simplicity's One Layer Wednesday challenge for this week. The challenge is always to use one layer of cardstock folded in half but this week the stipulation was to mask a background. I decided to try sponging for this since I've never done it before and I always like to try things once!

Here's my card:



The butterfly stamp is from an Inkadinkado set I bought recently. There's some cute little birdie stamps in the set too which I need to try and use sometime soon.

I also took a few photos and made up a short tutorial of how I made the masking for this card in the hopes that my trial and error can save others some hassles!

More Masking - Tutorial
Choose a piece of card stock that can be cut to fit the width of your selected cardfront. Begin by punching two squares/shapes next to each other at a respectable distance. I made mine 3/16" apart.

I wanted to make a 4" square card so I cut the width of the masking template to 4" across after using my centering ruler (where would I be without it?!) to work out the exact middle between the two squares.
The farthest this punch can punch into is 1/2" so I cut the length to 3 3/8" which meant I didn't have to worry about lining up the top sides of the squares, just the sides.

I then drew lines going down the left sides of both punched squares to the bottom of the template to indicate where the left edges of the punch should sit when punching my remaining two squares.

All of this measuring allowed me to just slide the punch straight up as far as it would go into the paper and use the pencil line guides to make the squares evenly spaced. Here's the finished mask:

Then it was simply a matter of applying some removable adhesive and choosing a colour to sponge on! Here's the sponging finished:

I lined up the masking template with the sides but eyeballed the top and bottom (I wanted it up slightly higher than the middle to make room for the sentiment).

To mask the stamp I wanted to use within the sponged squares I used the sponging template to trace around each square on a post-it to guide where to punch. I used a little bit of extra removable adhesive to make sure that it didn't move around at all when using it as a mask, and then stamped the design.

I added the sentiment and that was it! I hope this tutorial is helpful to someone out there. Please let me know if you have any questions or comments.

I'm getting in pretty late to the Simplicity One Layer Wednesday challenge this week. I found this one hard, not because I couldn't think of anything to repeat, but because I was so spoilt for choice! I have dozens and dozens of wee stamps I can use repetitively, so it was hard to just go with one for this card.

In the end I used one of the little leafy things in one of my new Hero Arts sets - Truly Appreciated.



I used my simple masking trick to create the two strips above and below the sentiment and coloured them with Prismacolor pencils. I stamped the sentiment before colouring the leaves as I didn't want to spend ages colouring something that would end up in the scrap heap due to a crooked sentiment.

I was trolling through some of the blogs I subscribe to when I chanced upon CAStastic challenges. The challenge this week is to use the sentiment as the main focus of the card. It was fate!

Congratulations with prams

I made two cards for the One Layer Wednesday challenge at Simplicity this week. This one and then this one:

I made my husband pick out his favourite of the two because I couldn't decide. I think I like this one better, but I hate the way the black sentiment looks so stark against the pastels of the prams. If I wasn't going to overlap the sentiment I would have it in a similarly muted shade.

To get it centered I used my centering ruler to work out the middle of the card, drew a little mark for it, and then drew a line horizontally where I wanted the pram's wheels to rest. I then made sure that my pink pram was stamped according to the vertical centre (as well as the horizontal line I had drawn) and stamped the other two prams on either side.

The above card uses a stamp I made myself using an eraser, my fiskars shape cutter and a utility blade. There are squillions of tutorials for this sort of thing on the web. Here's one I found helpful.

Little Princess

The Simplicity One Layer Wednesday challenge this week was to use an overlapped image with a sentiment, and boy did I find it difficult!

In the end I came up with two cards that suit the challenge, but the card below is my entry:



I added a bit of spica pen to the sparkly spots in the tiara. Click on the image to see it close up.

This is also my first attempt at photographing with a coloured background (Simplicity style) and I like it!

Just Saying Hello

Another One Layer Wednesday challenge card from Simplicity today. This time the challenge was to make a one layer card with a faux embellishment (as in, a stamp masquerading as a button or in my card, stitching).

Here's what I came up with:



I used a bit of tissue paper and some removable adhesive to mask the bottom of the tree to make the stitching look more like grass.

Size of card: 4" x 5 1/2" (top folding)

Stamps - Inque Boutique "Memoirs" collection, Papercraft border, Hero Arts "Classic Messages"
Ink - Versacolor "Pinecone" and "Olive"
Tools - Fiskars paper trimmer, Marbig poster tack, tissue paper, Cre8tive spring scissors

Challenge: OLW#5

Masking tutorial

This is a tutorial for how I did the masking technique in yesterday's card.

What you will need:
A blank card
Stamp of choice - something that will look nice repeated or even a background stamp
Ink of choice
Ruler - to work out corners
Pencil - to mark corners
Post-its - the sticky part should be as long as each side of your stamped area

Take your blank card. Mine is 4" square Quill white cardstock that I cut and scored using my Fiskars paper trimmer.

Work out how much white space you want around your stamped area. I've chosen roughly 1.8cm (5/8") each side. I used my centering ruler for this which made it really easy, but any ruler would do the job. Once you've worked out where your corners are, indicate them with your pencil (press lightly, you'll want to erase these later!)



Then line up the post-its with the corners. Try not to let them overlap too much - the height can cause parts of the stamp not to stamp properly.



Once you have all of your post-its lined up according to your pencil marks you can erase them and start stamping. I have used the same SeeD's stamp from yesterday's card, but I've had success using this technique with a variety of stamps from borders to shapes. The key is to experiment - you never know what you'll come up with!

The picture below shows my stamped area finished:



As you can see there are a few areas that didn't stamp great over the post-its. A way to avoid this would be to press harder over the post-its without rolling and distorting the stamp. Lesson learned!

All that's left to do is take off the post-its (keep them somewhere handy - they can be reused for your next masked card) and you're done!

More Congratulations

Another congratulations card! I realised the other day that I have absolutely none in my little stockpile and I imagine will need some in the future, so here we are.

This card follows the below sketch from Clean and Simple:





I actually made this card last night sans raffia. I left it on my desk and when I came in tonight to photograph it I thought to myself - how mundane! And it doesn't even follow the sketch! But my original problem was that I didn't have any light purple ribbon (a situation I intend on remedying this weekend!) but a quick rifle through my raffia drawer (yes, I have THAT much raffia) and the result was a happier card. I actually tied this one ON to the card, and didn't just glue it on the back because I have so much of this stuff I don't mind wasting a bit on the inside, and used a bit of glue to adhere it into place. Birthday Wishes with butterflies

I made this card for One Layer Wednesday #4 by Simplicity the challenge being to create a one-layer card with a ribbon. So here is my take:



I picked out the ribbon first and then chose my ink colours to try to keep everything looking clean and simple.

Make a Wish! - OLW #2

I made this card for the Simplicity One Layer Wednesday challenge #2. The challenge was to use glitter or flock somewhere on a one layer card. I used crystal Glitzee on the icing on the cupcake which I applied with a cotton bud to minimise big lumps of glue.
